What to Wear Under a Thobe

Grey 3/4 shorts for muslim men

Most men wear a light undershirt and a pair of loose trousers called sirwal under a thobe. In a US winter, add a thermal base layer underneath and a coat on top; in summer, keep it to thin, breathable cotton.

What you wear underneath affects how your thobe hangs, how comfortable you feel and how modest the outfit is. Here is a simple guide for every season.

The basics: undershirt and sirwal

Undershirt. A thin cotton T-shirt or tank keeps sweat off your thobe, helps it hang smoothly and adds a layer of coverage.

  • Choose a crew neck with collarless thobes, such as the M119 Aqua Blue Omani Thobe, so the undershirt does not peek out at an angle.
  • A V-neck or crew neck both work with collar thobes, since the collar covers the neckline.
  • Under white or light thobes, choose white or a shade close to your skin tone. Dark or patterned undershirts can show through in bright light.

Sirwal. Sirwal are loose, lightweight trousers, usually with a drawstring or elastic waist. They are the traditional choice under a thobe because they are comfortable, modest and easy to pray in.

If you do not own sirwal yet, loose cotton lounge pants or thin chinos in a neutral color will do. Avoid jeans: they are bulky, they show through lighter fabrics and they make sitting on the floor uncomfortable.

Why the layers matter for modesty

For many Muslim men, modesty is a big reason to wear a thobe. In Islamic teaching, many scholars describe a man’s awrah as the area between the navel and the knees, which should be covered by clothing that is not see-through or tight.

A thobe already covers far more than that. A good undershirt and sirwal simply make sure that nothing shows through in sunlight, when you sit, or when you bow and prostrate in prayer. Choose layers that are loose rather than clingy.

What to wear under a thobe in winter

From Minneapolis to Boston, US winters are cold. You do not have to give up your thobe; you just need smarter layers.

  1. Base layer: A thin thermal top and thermal leggings (merino wool or a synthetic blend) go on first. They add real warmth without bulk.
  2. Sirwal or trousers: Wear these over the thermal leggings as normal.
  3. Undershirt or light sweater: A fine-knit crew-neck sweater can replace the undershirt on very cold days. Keep it thin so the thobe still falls cleanly.
  4. Thobe: Fabric weight matters. The M105 Midnight Black Prestige Thobe, made from premium TR suiting fabric, has a more structured feel that suits colder months.
  5. Outer layer: A knee-length or longer wool overcoat, a long padded jacket or a sleeveless vest. Some men also wear a cardigan or knit vest over the thobe indoors.

Finish with warm socks, closed leather shoes or boots, and a scarf. If you plan to layer heavily, the next chest width up may be more comfortable. Our thobe size finder explains how widths work.

What to wear under a thobe in summer

Humid summers in Houston, Atlanta or Washington, DC call for the opposite approach.

  • Skip the thermal and choose the thinnest cotton undershirt you own, or a sleeveless one.
  • Wear lightweight cotton sirwal.
  • Choose breathable fabrics. Our Japanese cotton thobes, including the M123 Dusty Pink Omani Thobe and the M124 Light Green Omani Thobe, are soft and easy to wear in warm weather.
  • Leather sandals are fine for summer, especially for the masjid where you will take your shoes off anyway.

All our US thobes have long sleeves, which many men prefer for modesty and sun protection.

Shoes and socks

  • Warm months: leather sandals or slides.
  • Cool months: loafers, ankle boots or clean leather sneakers with socks.
  • Formal events: polished leather loafers or dress shoes in brown or black.

Because a traditional thobe falls just above the ankle, your socks will show. Pick plain, dark or neutral socks.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Dark undershirt under a white thobe. It shows through, especially outdoors.
  • Bulky layers. Thick hoodies or jeans spoil the line of the thobe. Go thin and add warmth on the outside.
  • Tight undershirts. A clingy layer can show its outline. Choose something with a little room.
  • Wrong length. If the thobe drags on the ground or sits high on your shins, the layers underneath will draw attention. Check your size first.

A note for first-time wearers

If this is your first thobe, keep it simple: a white undershirt, light sirwal and a comfortable pair of shoes. A clean, easy cut such as one of our Omani thobes is a good place to start, and you can explore all thobes once you know what you like.
