It\u2019s also mentioned that a <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/mens-jubba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thobe<\/a> is typically a single garment, and not multiple items of clothing worn together.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, these are very literal definitions. Nowadays, we understand a thobe to be a long robe typically worn in the Arab countries, though the design has now spread across the globe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allah mentions the word in the Qur\u2019an in its plural form:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u0648\u064e\u062b\u0650\u064a\u064e\u0627\u0628\u064e\u0643\u064e \u0641\u064e\u0637\u064e\u0647\u0650\u0651\u0631\u0652<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd purify your clothes\u201d (Qur\u2019\u0101n 74:4)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thobes are also commonly referred to as\u00a0<strong>thawb, thoob, kandura, or dishdasha<\/strong>, depending on the country and local dialect, but they all refer to the same style of modest, full-length garment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-did-thobes-originate\"><strong>Where did <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/mens-jubba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thobes<\/a> originate?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s difficult to trace the origins of the <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/mens-jubba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thobe<\/a>. Various ancient cultures seem to have had some sort of long robe within their \u2018wardrobe\u2019. It appears that this form of dress was relatively common throughout the ages in many cultures including the Arabs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nowadays, the <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/mens-jubba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thobe<\/a> is commonly seen worn by Arabs, and their influence has seen it spread to Muslims around the world.\u00a0 The Arabs tend to style their thobes with <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/keffiyeh-scarves\/\">Keffiyehs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/keffiyeh-scarves\/\">Shemaghs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-did-the-prophet-wear-a-thobe\"><strong>Did the Prophet wear a thobe?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the topic of Prophetic clothing, the Prophet was known to not be picky about the clothing he wore (as long as it covered the parts of the body that needed covering!). Hence, he is recorded to have worn a number of different types of clothing in different \u1e25ad\u012bth, including a <em>qam\u012b\u1e63<\/em> (a type of long shirt), a <em><a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/mens-jubba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">jubbah<\/a><\/em> (a long outer robe, open at the front), a <em>\u1e25ibarah<\/em> (a striped, Yemeni cloak) and a <em>\u1e25ullah<\/em> (two pieces of unsewn cloth, worn similar to an <em>i\u1e25r\u0101m<\/em> in <em>\u1e25ajj<\/em>).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one most closely resembling the modern <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/mens-jubba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thobe<\/a> is the <em>qam\u012b\u1e63<\/em>. A \u1e25ad\u012bth mentions that the Prophet\u2019s most preferred item of clothing was a <em>qam\u012b\u1e63<\/em> (<em>Ab\u016b D\u0101w\u016bd<\/em>, <em>Tirmidh\u012b<\/em>).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Umm Salamah i narrated: The most loved garment to the Messenger of Allah was the Qam\u012b\u1e63 (long shirt)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the word <em>qam\u012b\u1e63<\/em> means \u2018shirt\u2019 in normal Arabic vocabulary. However, a famous 16<sup>th<\/sup> century scholar who lived in Makkah called Mull\u0101 \u02bfAl\u012b al-Qari r, explains that the meaning of <em>qam\u012b\u1e63<\/em> during the time of the Prophet g was a stitched item of clothing, made of cotton, with sleeves and a pocket. Elsewhere, \u02bfAll\u0101mah Qas\u1e6dall\u0101n\u012b r, a 15th century Egyptian scholar states that the length of the Prophet\u2019s g <em>qam\u012b\u1e63<\/em> was quite long and reached to around the mid-calf.\u00a0Therefore, it appears that this <em>qam\u012b\u1e63<\/em> closely resembled the modern thobe.\u00a0In terms of colours, the Prophet is known to have preferred <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product\/white-emirati-thobe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white<\/a>, as it is the colour of purity. He also liked wearing green, the colour worn by the people of paradise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-would-constitute-sunnah-clothing-are-thobes-sunnah\"><strong>What would constitute <em>sunnah<\/em> clothing?<\/strong> <strong>Are <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/mens-jubba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thobes <\/a>Sunnah?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Muslims, we endeavour to follow the Prophet in all aspects of life. This is called following the <em>sunnah<\/em>. <em>Sunnah<\/em> clothing could therefore refer to clothing worn by the Prophet. Therefore, clothing which resembles that which the Prophet wore, such as the modern <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/mens-jubba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thobe<\/a>, could be counted as <em>sunnah<\/em> clothing. From an Islamic perspective, thobes align with the principle of modest dress, as garments should be loose-fitting and should not extend below the ankles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other thobe-like clothing that is recorded to have been worn by the Prophet would also be considered <em>sunnah<\/em>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>jubbah<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a <em>\u1e25ad\u012bth<\/em> (<em>Bukh\u0101r\u012b<\/em>, <em>Muslim<\/em>) the outer garment sometimes worn by the Prophet is described as a <a href=\"https:\/\/al-aniq.com\/us-site\/product-category\/mens-jubba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>jubbah<\/em><\/a> which the scholars explain was a long wool cloak with long sleeves, open at the front, similar to a modern-day <em>bisht<\/em> or <em>\u02bfab\u0101\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>\u1e24ibarah<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This refers to an embroidered Yemeni cloak, maybe similar to the hooded cloaks often seen worn in some African countries today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>\u1e24ullah<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <em>\u1e25ullah<\/em> is described as two pieces of unstitched cloth. One is worn as a lower garment, as a <em>lunghi<\/em>\/<em>iz\u0101r<\/em>\/sarong (very commonly seen worn in South and Southeast Asia today) and the other is worn as an upper garment.
