FAQs About Thobes

What is a thobe?

A thobe (also spelled thawb, thaub, or thob) is a long-sleeved, ankle-length robe traditionally worn by men across the Middle East. It is generally worn mostly by Muslims but is not exclusive to just them. It is made from breathable fabrics, that would be suitable in warmer climates.

Japanese cotton thobes are the most sought after thobes in the Middles East. At Al Aniq they are the popular due to their quality and durability. We also have thobes in shiny polyester which is generally worn in the West. Our short sleeve thobes are made with cotton blend. We also have thobes made from Terry rayon fabric which slightly thicker, made for the colder climate.

Thobes are not a religious requirement in Islam, but they are a traditional and cultural garment. Many Muslims wear thobes as a symbol of modesty and because they resemble the style of clothing worn during the time of the Prophet Muhammad, making them Sunnah-friendly but not obligatory.

Thobes are not exclusive to Muslims only. They can be worn by people of all faith and culture, as long as respect for the culture and religion of Islam is maintained whilst wearing the thobes.

A thobe itself is not directly prescribed as Sunnah, since the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wore the traditional garments of his era, which were loose and modest. However, many Muslims consider wearing a thobe Sunnah-friendly because it fulfills the Islamic principles of modesty and resembles the Prophet’s style of dress.

  1. Undershirt: Some people wear a lightweight undershirt or vest under the thobe for added comfort. It can help absorb sweat and prevent the thobe from sticking to the body.
  2. Long Robe or Jubbah: In some cultures, it is common to wear a long robe, called a “jubbah” or “dishdasha,” as an underlayer beneath the thobe. This adds an extra layer of clothing and can be especially comfortable in colder weather.
  3. Kandura or Sirwal: In the Gulf region, it is common to wear a kandura (the local name for a thobe) over a sirwal, which is a wide-legged, loose-fitting pair of trousers. This combination provides extra comfort and modesty, and the sirwal may be visible when the thobe is raised.
  4. Additional Layers for Warmth: In colder climates or during the winter, some individuals may opt to wear thermal or long-sleeve base layers under their thobes for added warmth.
  5. 3/4 Shorts/Awrah Shorts: Recently, we have introduced awrah shorts to wear under the thobes or even worn on their own with any other outfit of choice. Designed to be seamless and made from cotton blend fabric, these 3/4 shorts are wardrobe must-haves. We have introduced them in 3 new colours: black, whiteand grey. Their seamless and comfortable nature make them perfect to wear as thobe trousers or thobe pants.
